ONE in 10 Australians have tried the popular party drug ice, or its variants, which can keep users awake for days or even weeks on end.
More disturbingly, users of so-called methamphetamines are 11 times more likely to have suffered a psychotic episode than the wider population.
The first major study on stimulant drugs since the early 1990s found that 3per cent of the population have used party drugs in the past year.
Ice is increasingly popular among young, well-educated and employed professionals who do not regard themselves as having a drug problem.
It has outstripped heroin as the drug of concern for health and law enforcement officials and replaced ecstasy as the drug of choice for partygoers.
