CANCER has returned to haunt the family of Test cricketer Glenn McGrath, with wife Jane revealing she has been diagnosed once again with breast cancer.
Mrs McGrath had been in remission from breast cancer for some years.
Although she first was diagnosed in 1997, the couple went on to have two healthy children, James and Holly, despite being warned that the chemotherapy could make her infertile.
The children were even breast-fed. Mrs McGrath’s story was an inspiration to women around the country.
But last year she was diagnosed with secondary cancer. Her husband rushed home from a tour of the West Indies.
“I think I was less of a victim the second time,” she tells Andrew Denton on the ABC’s Enough Rope tonight.
Mrs McGrath, who adheres to a diet of mainly organic food, says everyone in life has challenges. “This is one of mine and I’ll rise to the challenge, though you sometimes feel that that bar’s getting higher and higher, but it’ll never be too high so we’ll do whatever we can.”
She recalls the moment when she first became aware of the lump in her breast. She asked her husband what he thought, to which he replied “looks all right to me”.
“As men are with breasts,” she jokes. Luckily, a friend persuaded her to go to the doctor.
