THE London-to-Sydney 2001 Air Race began last night in foggy and freezing conditions, with 35 entrants ranging from a tiny plane called a grasshopper to medium-sized jets and old fighter aircraft.
They took off from Biggin Hill, Kent, and are expected to arrive in Sydney on April 7, after following the multiple-stop Kangaroo Route made famous during the races of 1919 and 1934.
The Centenary of Federation race has already been marred by tragedy after two US women pilots crashed near Iceland on their way to the starting line.
